Instructor apologizes for asking students to write about whom they’d kill (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12793768/)

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - A high school teacher has apologized for asking students to write about whom they would kill and how they would do it.

Michael Maxwell, who teaches industrial technology at Central High School, said his request that students in his beginning drafting class describe how they would carry out a murder was merely a writing prompt. It was not clear why he asked the drafting class to write fiction.

"I made a horrible mistake that I regret," Maxwell said. "I want to apologize to my students, my colleagues and to the community."

The April 21 writing request, which Maxwell said was not a formal assignment, came to the attention of administrators when a parent of one of the students filed a complaint with Principal Barton Albright.

Albright expressed regret and apologized for Maxwell's "lapse of judgment."

"He's an exemplary person.... This is very out of character," the principal said.

Maxwell won't lose his job, but he has been suspended for a week without pay and placed on six months' probation.

The school superintendent says no further action will be taken against Maxwell. She says, "This has rocked his world, as it has rocked our world."

About 25 to 30 students from ninth through 12th grades were in the class, Albright said.

What's the big deal? I wish I had teachers in high school that would have allowed me to make a list of people I'd like to off.

I think it's a pretty cool assignment. Probably the reason why I don't teach.

It does sound like a cool assignment; however I'm sure the school board is remembering Columbine when they're doing what they're doing.

You all think this is okay? That's fucked up. Most of you don't even know how to spell in the first place. The sad thing is that you don't even realize it. Now you just want to waste school with essays about killing people?

fucking dipshits. Yes, it's okay to say stupid little shit about killing people if you say it on a whim and don't mean it. But to elaborate about it in essay format is just morbid. The teacher should be fired and all of the students should be talked to about it. This is not okay. I'm appalled. Blowing this off is what leads to mass murders.

^slow your roll there rick. while horrible and not something for high school, college could make sense. COnsidering half the stuff we talked about and how deep some classes go, why not? I'm not talking 101 classes but the upper level ones where students should know the difference and they've weeded out the stupid ones.

But yeah, high school. Fire him. Write an essay on it.
