I have an 89 Regal Custom 2.8L that has developed a nasty ps leak. Local garage gave me a $300+ estimate to replace, so I'm wondering if this is something a novice could easily replace to save some bucks.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Power steering pumps are pretty easy to replace and same for the lines. What exactly is leaking? I have changed a lot of powersteering pumps in my day so I'm pretty sure I can help.

Seems to be leaking right where the reservoir and hose connect. I haven't got under it to further examine it though.

If it's where the hose connects to the reservoir check if it is loose. I know that might sound basic and you might have already done this but it is where I would start.

If it is tight then chances are the seal around the hole on the reservoir has gone. or where the rubber and metal come together on the line has a hole.

The easiest way to check is to wipe the wet area's dry, fill the reservoir with fluid, start the car and look to see where the fluid is coming out.

If it is as nasty as you say then you will see it with out any problems.
If it is a tiny thing then you'll have to look a bit harder.

If it is the reservoir then
Disconnect all the lines from it.
Then unbolt (uaually 2 or 3 bolts) the reservoir from the brackets.... One bolt will control the tension of the pully. *Or there might be a pully tesion bracket somewhere on the motor. Just look for a pully wheel which doesn't do anything but turn a wheel.
Bolt in the new reservoir but don't tighten the bolt that controls the tension of the pully
Reconnect the lines
Use a long bar to push or pull the the reservoir in the direction that tightens the pully *or do this to the pully tension bracket
Fill the res, start the car, top up fluid to proper level, put the lid on and you're done

If it is one of the lines then
Disconnect the line
Connect the new one
Fill the reservoir because the fluid will have drained out all over your drive way:grinyes: start the car and top up to proper level, you're done.

If you have any other questions just post.
