how much of a difference?

I believe my Formula has 3.23 gears currently. How much of a difference can I expect from 3.73s perhaps?
I understand that I'll be gaining launch power, but losing top speed. Is the change going to be that significant be be worth it? I don't think I'm ever going to go "top speed" anyway.
Also, I understand that my mileage will be worse, but will it be that much worse? I'm not going to 4.10s or anything.
Also, will I be able to feel more power if I stomp the gas already going 80mph? or only at takeoffs?
I don't want my car to run rougher, just have a little more power to move!

You gain 2 or 3 tenths in the quarter and lose 1 or 2 MPG highway.

So, save my money for some other mod's first?

No, gears are one of the major bang for buck mods out there. People who go from lower gears such as 2.73's see larger gains but 3 tenths is nothing to laugh at. Thats a 3 car length lead. Pretty much the largest gain your going to get from anything short of NOS, Supercharger ,Turbo or head/cam package.

I got some 3.73 gears on the way but it will probly be next week or week end b4 i can get them in but i'll let you know the diffrence it does to my bird. I am going from the 2.73 gears tho so it should be fairly impressive. cross my fingers. just trying to find some way to measure the difference since my speedo will be off after changing the gears.

3:23's to 3:73's they say (read in mag) is not worth the upgrade.

Using a street cam with a flat power curve you probably won't notice that much of a difference. When you use a cam with the torque curve in the higher RPM's, gears are essential as they get you into the power R's quicker. This was many years ago but I went to 4:10's on a 428HO Trans Am with a pretty agressive cam. The acceleration was fun, the way the car ran was not. Without an overdrive I was getting about 6 or 8 mpg. Of course I could light them up going 40 mph when I punched it. For street/strip or a weekend warrior, gears are fine. You don't want 4:10s in a daily driver IMHO

I went from 3.23 to 3.73 when I blew a pinion. It did make a bit of difference but not that much. It does have slightly better take off and better acceleration, like passing. I don't know if I would have changed it if it hadn't blown, but since I had to. :)

I'm not looking for a 4.10s kinda difference. I took a spin in my buddy's Camaro this weekend with 3.73s and I liked the difference over my 3.23s. And, the price is not outrageous. I'm trying to keep my bird a daily driver, and just add a little more testosterone.
