Not sure if you have gotten the marks or not.
The timing marks are as follows.

The crankshaft should be brought up to where the #1 piston is TDC. Sure you know that, but just adding it in.
The camshashaft will have a small "V" shaped notch on underneath one of the teeth. A little prong should be sticking out from just below the camshaft gear with like three marks on it. Now as you are looking at it, you will want to line that "V" shapped mark up with the first tooth on that marker. The one closest to the passenger side of the vehicle. I looked this up in the repair manual I have.
Make sure the engine, crankshaft, #1 piston, and distributor are in the Top Dead Center position. This should be all correct. If you need anything else, just message me or pop a reply on to the thread here.

And hope it didn't bend valves when the belt broke.....

It is a non-interference if I recall so it shouldn't hurt the valves.

IT should not hurt the valves at all. Usually if you try start the car afterwards is when you get the problem of bent valves, but it is a really rare occurance and with the 2.3 liter engine, it is non-interference as he said. usually that happens really easy with an Escort with a 1.9 liter.
