auto shifter Question

I had a broken shifter in my camaro...so i looked on ebay and scored one for $10 out of a 89 firebird.......anyway the question is.........
What the heck does the cable operated by the Shifter button do? ( shift detent cable?)

Just lets you shift out of park/into reverse/from overdrive to drive/etc...
its just a safety thing...

lol.......thanks....give me some credit here....i'll speak simply....there are 2 cable coming from the shifter one goes to the side of the trans to shift gears ( P R N OD D 2 1 ) theres another one that is activated by the button on the shifter ( the one you have to push to get the shifter to move)......Whats its purpose and where does it go to?????
BTW.. I'm not screaming or angry and iv'e seen a car before, give me some credit

That cable goes to the ignition switch. There is a little device bolted to the ignition switch that won't let you move the shifter unless the key is turned on, the cable goes to that.
