Today I went and tried to help a friend with her 94 jetta GL manual. The car would start sometimes with no problem and others it would not turn over. She had someone replace the starter thinking it was that but soon there after same thing it would not turn over at all. I jumped the starter to the battery and it started right up. I hear a few relay clicking under the dash when the key is turned but I checked the one clip on starter wire (red w/t black stripe) for voltage but was getting nothing. I only had a piece of junk repair manual that helped none. Is there a relay that would cause this? I jiggled the key making sure that it was not messed up but still got nothing. I need to know why there is no juice to this wire that seems the start the car.

According to the diagram, the battery voltage passes through the ignition switch, and then goes to the anti-theft alarm module. This incoming wire to the alarm module is red. Check to see if you have voltage there. This would eliminate the ignition switch. The outgoing wire from the alarm module is red/blk which goes to the solenoid of the starter. That should get you started.

According to Boschman, it's located above the driver's feet behind the knee panel. A link to disabling the alarm and its location is in the link...

ok did what was outlined in this but there was no voltage out of either wire so were do i go from here does that one wire go straight to the ignition switch or what. I am staring to suspect the switch and from what i have read you have to pull the stering column out and stuff like that. Is it true? I have found a key hot wire on the 10 pin conector can I just put a push button sart off of that since the key still needs to be in and on it is a small black wire but i threw a toggle switch on there and it starts fine. I just do not want to burn this chicks car up can someone help

Here's a link (giving credit to Boschman) which will show you all of the wiring diagrams for your vehicle. Holler back if you got any more questions...

Sounds like you need to replace your ignition switch. I have seen alot of ignition switches fail. They get cracks in them causing the car not to run and/or different things not to work like the radio, dash lights, etc. Is anything working when you try turning the key to the on position?

I would go buy an ignition switch. You don't have two remove everthing to test it. Removed both covers around the steering wheel. Then discconect the switch. Installed the new switch. You will need to get the key and a small screwdriver. Put the key into the ignition and turn it on, then with the screwdriver start the car. If the car startes and runs, go ahead and remove everthing and install the ignition switch into the right place.
