How to get codes?

I have a 94 Jetta GLS III. The diagnostic port is located to the right of the ash tray, with an OBD-II connector. According to the OBD-II website it has the ISO pinout. I've tried a couple of different code readers and they can't pull the codes (probably because they were OBD-II readers). When I tried the expensive reader the Check Engine Light flashed 3 three times before the code reader timed out.
From what I've been told, there's two pins to jump to be able to pull the codes. Which pins do I jump? Also, how would I clear the codes?
This car is starting to drive me nuts :banghead:. Thanks for any help. :)
