My 94 Jetta has difficulty with starting always when cold, and sometimes when hot. It takes often more than 5 tries to start it, need to push gas pedal hardly, and explosion-like sound is coming from the area of outake manifold of the engine, or lower exhaust pipe, when the engine revs. But runs fine when once started. I can hear the fuel pump running when turning the ignition key. Whole distributor has been replaced, because originally suspecting the 1st valve sensor on the distributor housing has failed (check engine light was on, now is off). Please advice what can be the reason.

Go ahead and read the code and that may get you started in the right direction. Here is a link of how to read the code that I pasted awhile back. It's the last post in this link....post back to let us know what the code is.

Thanks for the reply. The check engine light is now off, so there won't be any error code reported. I suspect some sensor is bad, guess the one that has something to do with the cold start (coolant or air inflow). But which one?
