just got a 87 celica

i just got a 87 celica gts and the guy who i bought it from told me that the original engine blew so he went to a japanese engine store and bought a 3sge charged him about 1500. i know this engine is the first gen 3sge now my question is how can i tell if this engine is the jdm one or the american released one? any help is appreciated thank you.

look for an egr valve. i think usdm has them and jdm doesnt.

^yup, should be on the back of the intake manifold, if you dont know what to lok for find the charcol canister (big black round thing on the right hand side) and follow the lines to the intake manifold, what it connects to is the egr valve
