I was wondering if anyone could advise me how to get into racing, what type of car you would suggest for some one new to it.

I assume you are just starting to drive? There are many options on this as this seems to be a common thread recently with many different responses. Some things you may want to include are your price range, are you using it as the daily driver, what type of things are you looking for in the car (RWD, AWD, FWD, turbo, NA, Japanese, American, etc.). You should look at different reviews on cars and check out the mpg, reliability, modification potential, saftey if thats an issue for you, etc.

You wanna get into racing?
step 1: get a driver's license
step 2: get a car (it dosent matter what car you get since no one drives a good car the first time around)
step 3: drive for a few months till you got the hang of it
step 4: contact your local SCCA and find out where they are having the next event.
step 5: show up to the event with the registration money (between 20 and 40 dollars usually) and race.

TA-DA...easy as hell right?

and if drag racing is your thang its even easier. just follow steps 1 - 3 then find out where the nearest track is and go pay and run.

That is the best way if you want to get into racing. Also, I suggest you stay away from high power cars and stick to something like a Civic Si because, like Musashi said, you're not going to be fast anyhow because of a lack of driving experience. Learn to drive fast first and then get a fast car. It is much safer for everyone and you will learn better in a slower car.

Get a 2002 Subaru WRX. Let the modding begin as you get use to the power. Stock they only put out like 170whp. It's when you add mods that it gets fun.

For racing? get one of these-
http://www.edmunds.com/media/il/features/general/aerial.atom/ariel.atom.lead.340.jpg

Ariel Atom w/ Honda K20 for less then a Corvette, 200hp, <500kg, faster around the Top Gear track then a Porsche Carrera GT.
:smokin:

A supercharged one is probably the best track car under $100,000. For over $100,000, I'd wait for a Freestream T1. :icon16: For over a million, Ferrari sometimes sells old F1 cars...

Realistically it all depends what kind of racing you want to get into, more information would be useful.

Better yet, go Super Kart. Super cheap (for racing) at 30 grand, 0-100 in less than 3 seconds, 150mph top speed, and capable of pulling over 2g's when cornering. In-kart footage from a Laguna Seca race (http://users.cyberzane.net/rforker/SuperkartVideos/kranz.wmv)

My point in saying not to get a capable car is that you will hone your skills more with a less capable car.

some people hate civics, some people like them, i'm in between, dont know about civics where you live, but around here you see civics everywhere, and they have the same thing done to them, by all means i have respect for a civic that's done right, but those are hard to come by, most of them are ricier than me, its like "oh, another civic" but maybe thats different in your area

I know what i drive, and i choose what i drive because i planned for the future, i dont need a car that drinks gas like micheal jackson drinks boys milk, and constantly cutting deep scars in my wallet from maintenance and insurance, thats why a top priority of mine was four doors = less insurance costs. I need a car to get me from point A to point B untill i'm finished with college + i'm a big toyota fan, keep in mind that i dont live with mommy and daddy, damn, im getting sick and tired of repeating myself to people who makes comments like "you drive a slow car, you have no right to say that" etc etc,..... Just because i'm not fast doesn't mean i can't post my opinions about civics, i may as well buy a 11 sec car the next day, but i'm still the same person with the same views on a civic. Why are we so prejudice, labeling people for what they drive, I'm no excuse, but i tend to label the car more than the person, but i would never say "you drive a slow car, you have no right to say that" (maybe not the exact words, but you get the point)....its not what you drive, but what you've done to it and how you drive. In the end, i'm just a regular car enthusiast like you, trying to keep it real

I wasn't saying you can't have an opinion about Civics. My point was that you saying it's still just a Civic is like the pot calling the kettle black. I just can't stand when people have to be an ass like that about a car they have never driven and know nothing about. There are loads of Civics around where I live and most of them are done up the same way and slow. However, that doesn't mean that I just write the car off because the majority of its owners are morons.

Also, don't preach to me about taking shit for the car you drive. I have taken more flack for driving and modding a LeBaron than you can begin to imagine. In fact before you started posting here an entire forum of Toyota guys registered just to tell me things like my car is a pile of shit and they hope that I drive it off a cliff with me inside all because I made a comment about a Toyota, which was true. So, you don't need to preach to me.

sorry guys I beat you both, I get so much crap for driving a jetta, Guys saying it's a slow car since it's only a 1.8 (it's actually nice and quick) or others saying that it's a chick car (my opinion and from what i've seen 1.8t are guy cars cause i have only seen about 1 or 2 chick in miami driving one). I also get crap cause it's too plain or too quiet or it sucks cause it has hubs on it. But the way I see it i've had my fair share of cars, in the past 3 years this is my 3rd car. I had my diamante, which was perfect for daily driving with my buddies cause it was so comfortable, and it had enough power to have alot of fun in. I had my 94 celica gt, which wasnt the fastest car, but the handling was something that the diamante or my jetta couldnt match no matter what kind of suspension i put on the car. But even in those cars I got some crap too, The diamante's paint was fading, the rims werent flashy, It was all stock. The celica was a 2.2 so other guys were like the engine isnt big enough, I only had an intake and muffler on it from TRD with a GT-S badge that I didnt put so people bothered me about that. But at the end of the day in all 3 cars I realized that your gonna get crap no matter what you drive and that I was able to look at those guys and say, "doesnt matter, cause I can still kick the crap out of you no matter what the situation is"

Now as for my opinion on the new SI, they shouldve kept it 5 speed, they made it heavier and I dont like how they positioned the shifter. But, i do like the body style of it as well as the interior. The only problem I really have with it is that it's slow. On a course and 1/4 it got beat by the new GLI AND GTI and I can beat both of those even when I'm stock , but hey civics have always been an economical car for the everyday driver.

I think Musashi gave the best advice.

Also, it doesn't matter what kind of car you have even if it is a grocery getter ie. corolla or civic... experience in a slow POS is the best way to learn how to manipulate a car, then work your way up.

BTW, the new Civic Si is okay, but the new Civic Type R is pure sex.... unfortunately, the US once again gets the deep shaft...

The new Civic I think are Ok. I still wouldn't buy one but it is an improvement from the rest of the previous Civics. I too think its unfortunate people get bashed due to their cars. Why? There may be a car that have a bunch of asses for owners but I usually try to judge each person individually. The most bashed people for owning the cars that they do are V6 Stangs, Civics, and Corollas. It's kind of unfortunate.

allright, i know what you're saying now, but its the image of the civic that i'm trying to point out, i mean...econobox, fwd, family sedan, 16 sec...(what else am i missing?) and most civic owners dont make the civic's reputation any better.,...so there's an image out there, know what i mean? I'm not saying my car is any better, i have no problems saying "in the end, its just a corolla",.but again, i have respect for hard work when i see it. And my apologies for the toyota guys' bashing, usually we're nice to everyone. every toyota forum i've been to is as nice as this one and helpful, no flaming or anything, cant say the same to some honda/acura/nissan forums out there (no offence to anyone)

If i had money i would be considering the AE86 'panda" (like what im looking at) for track light and quick (my opinion though). Full on straight drag 5.0 mustang.

Leave ricer alone i know what its like to drive a 16 odd sec ride it sucks. We all pick are cars for a reason like i picked mine for price and looks. He picked his for costs. Its all what you want in the end.

but then what would happen to all the civic nation commercials?????

ik what its like to drive a 16 sec 4 door car. its great if u wanna carry people and save gas, but the down side is its slow stock. wont easily get fast easier unless u got cash like that or convert it to a coupe or mass strip everything. thats how i ran my 15.8. i stripped everything out the inside of the car that could be bolted back oin quick.(passenger seat, back seats, all the trunk stuff, door panels. in the end it wasn;'t worth it. i guess erone usually starts out with a 4 door sedan econobox so they 'learn' how to drive, but since f&f came out, its not that great anymore. nowadays, if ur civic isnt boosted, engine swapped, or stripped out, its considered rice. and keep the bashing off of rice. im sure erone had a car that they are embarrassed to have.(not sayin u are rice(er), u said it for the future). now y dont u all start naming your first car and no lies. ill start first. 1990 chevy celebirty wagon v6...

We don't get the Civic Type R either.

I think Honda took the right steps.

We get the Integra Type-R (had, now it's Type-S) and Honda's reasosning was that since the civic and integra type-r's were so close in price, no one would bother getting a civic type-r over an integra type-r. They would just be eating up each other's market share.

From what I've heard, there's not enough difference between them to be worthwhile to market both.

And where did Honda get their new styling cues from?? Frrom themselves! The integra (rsx) civic and accord now all look the same. As well as the normal v6 accord, we also get the accord euro (2.4L I-4) and you cannot tell it apart from the new civic.

My first car was a 1992 Burgandy Mitsubishi diamante ls, it was re-built by me and my dad at 142,000 miles and then it was given to me as a christmas gift cause i loved the car. It had grey leather interior, dark enough tints where you couldnt see into the car, and a fun little button labeled "power" that would increase the torque in the car and put it to kick in at a lower end. (and no the button was not o/d cause the o/d was on the shifter) I drove it another 60,000 in the first and only year I had it, (yes I drive too much) where it then died case it developed an oil leak and looks like a piston was damaged. So I got rid of my favorite car and got the 94 celica gt. The diamante was a high 15 sec car like the celica so I wouldnt know much about driving 16's:icon16:

First car: 1970 Chevy Nova w/ a 350 V8, 3 speed auto and 3.90 gears... wasn't the fastest thing around but it was the quicker car at my highschool, which was a bit sad now that I think about it...

Would probably do low mid to low 14s at best... wasn't that great. Fun car though.

Second car, was my 1986 Chevy Blazer K5 4x4... the bigger blazer, not the small dinky poser blazer. It had a 350 V8 also (rated at breakneck 165hp, 250ft-lbs!!!!!!! haha), with a 4 speed auto. On 33" Yokohama Geolanders... man... that thing was awesome. Also where I got my 'RedNeck' name from, my mom and sister called it a Redneck truck, which I liked... so I got me one of those stick on windshield banners from Autozone that said "REDNECK" on it... Guy at the counter at Autozone was all DUDE THATS FRIGGIN SWEET!! when he saw what I was putting it on. haha.

It was the most comfortable vehicle I've ridden in today... seriously, it may of ridden like a truck but the seats were just cushhhh. If it didn't get 10mpg, and have some weird electrical gremlin that I coulnd't track down, I'd probably still have it.

Anywho... continuing on.
