too much carbon fiber...carrera GT content

I think I'm bordering on blind after this much decalling. I'm building the Carrera gt and after looking at the SMS templated CF set for it I realized that the weave direction on the real thing is so distinct that the templates just wouldn't do. I sat down with my digi pics I took at the porsche dealer of a pre-delivery GT and started to make an attempt to replicate the cf as faithfully as possible. I used pewter over black high definition decal from sms and will be finishing it off with a tint of X19 smoke to tone it down. Then I will be clearing and polishing the entire structure to bring a realistic depth and shine as close as I can get to the real one...

These pics are just after laying down the initial decals without X19 or clear. Hundreds and I mean hundreds of cut pieces...I can't see straight:rofl:

Beautiful job, but why on Earth didn't Porsche just re-invent the 550 Spyder properly?

No kidding, I thought I was the only one who thought that?!? I even made reference to one of the tech's at porsche and he didn't really know what a 550 was....what are they teaching them at school!?!!

Welllll...they certainly did a nice job re-inventing the 904 and calling it the Cayman. And lemme tell you...I spent a day driving my friend's new Cayman in the mountains on some of the best roads and the car is amazing. The handling is telepathic. I can see why some say it's the most pure Porsche made today. I hated my Miata for the first 5 minutes of driving it after 5 hours in the Cayman. In 10 minutes I had recovered and was happy again

Oh, and I think the Carrera GT is a neat car but butt-ugly :icon16:

Nice job on this model, of course. The C/F would drive me nuts.

I'm making one w/the roof section from a Porsche GT1. Looks much, much better

That's not even close to too much carbon fibre! :)

Excellent work, although according to my references I think you have a few of the weaves running the wrong way. No big deal I'm sure I messed mine up in some areas as well. Think I'll take a pic of mine mocked up and post it. :)

EDIT: Wrong forum too, I'll move it where it belongs.
EDIT2: Too slow Ray beat me to it. :)

I have enough problems trying to CF a flat hood. I would die trying to do that kind of work. It looks awesome. I love how good quality the pictures are too, what camera are you using?

Ya, some spots on it had to be a compromise due to space and angles. My primary concern is the backbone of the frame in the engine bay. It has a pretty distinct pattern from left to right and I didn't want to lose it!

As far as my camera, I have a sony 3.1 megapixel (I think!) I just tried to provide as much natural light as possible and a steady hand. My wife's the photographer in the family, not me!!

I tryed to do this with my carrera gt. It was my first try with carbon decals and I should have chosen a more simple subject, so I ripped it all off and painted it black...

great work ...

I use lots of microsol and set and I use a variety of brushes. Most of the brushes are soft so I won't damage the decal while I move it and work air bubbles out...lather rinse repeat!!
