Anyone running Mobil 1 or Amsoil? I am getting a little over 1.5 miles / gal. more with syn. oil (Mobil 1). My next oil change I am going to use Amsoil. They say 25000 miles between oil changes with Amsoil. After 6000 miles the oil (Mobil 1) is almost as clean as when I put it in. I also use a Mobil 1 filter for finer filteration.

Right now in Houston traffic I am getting 19.4 mpg. average. If everyone would go this route we could save a bunch of oil each day. At least a few million barrels a day. Maybe enough to bring the price down a bit.

You can see MPG changes from oil to oil, synthetic or not. The gap has narrowed between today's SM rated conventional oils and synthetic oil. The main advantage of running a synthetic oil is extended drain intervals. If you are dumping synthetic motor oil before 7-10Kmi, you are wasting a good oil and your money. 99% of owners dont use/need the hi/low temp capabilities synthetics have, so that leaves the sole benefit as extended change intervals. Today's ~$1.50/qt SM conventionals have all the high/low temp properties most drivers would ever need.

If you have ever been stuck in a Houston traffic jam in 100+ heat of a few hours with the a/c running, you want all the protection you can get. Rita evac was a great example.
Thank you for your comments.

That's true about the -20degF thing, but new conventional 5w-30's have awesome cold-cranking properties as well. I live in snowy, cold ski country and rarely see anything close to -20degF.

G/luck

I run Amsoil all the way around in my 02. I tow a lot in the summer, so synthetics are the way to go for me.

They say 25000 miles between oil changes with Amsoil.

They say deer whistles work. :shakehead

I wouldn't go 25,000 miles on any oil. But that's just me.

I don't think there is a SIGNIFICANT difference between any of the major brands of pure synthetic oil, but that's just me, too. For some bizarre reason, some people put an almost religious faith in certain automotive product brands, leading to these sorts of claims. It's oil. Mobile and Amsoil both have really smart chemical engineers; I seriously doubt one product has 2.5X the service life of the other.

I use Mobile 1 because it's a pure synthetic from a reputable manufacturer and (most importantly), I can get it at the local WalMart. I'm lazy that way. I change it at 6-10K, depending on use, conditions, and how it looks.

True, there probably isnt THAT big of a difference in the forumulation, but Amsoil can and actually does run 25K on a change. I will never do that as my oil tends to get pretty dark around 8-10K and it probably could go longer, but I choose to change it sooner.

And, Mobil 1 can go 15K, its says it on the bottle.:)
