Tranny Slipping

I just purchased a 72 MGB and notice the transmission tends to "pop" out of 2nd gear. I can hold the shifter in the 2nd gear position and it mostly stays in gear unless I let the clutch out and torque off the tranny. It it a linkage problem? I'm new to the MG World

Oh, and sorry for the multiple posts. My firewall acted up.

The most likly problem is a worn or bent linkage part or a worn shifter fork. It could also be something else. The linkage for the MGB transmission in inside the remote control housing. There is no adjustment, you replace the worn or damaged parts. The transmission will have to be removed for repair. If you don't have an overdrive transmission it is probably best to locate a replacement, there is no big demand for them and they usually sell cheap. Try to find one near you and pick it up as shipping would be very expensive, they are heavy.

Thanks for the information. So this must be a common problem with the standard 4 speed. The car only has 61,000 miles on it. Should I look for the 5 speed instead? It will cost more, but in the long run it would be better for the car's performance, correct?

Thanks, I'm finding all sorts of info on the internet on these cars. By the way, I also found out there is a big difference in the MGB and The MG Midget. Again, being new to the MG World, I have found out I have a MG Midget. So, my Username will be mis-leading.

Previous comments would also apply for your Midget. Slipping out of gear isn't a common problem with the MGB. As in all cars they do sometimes have transmission problems. The Midget transmission isn't as robust as the MGB transmission. A replacement may be more difficult to find than for the MGB because fewer Midgets were built. A 5 speed conversion would work better for a Midget. You are looking at a big expense for a five speed conversion. A kit is required plus the transmission will be more expensive than a used Midget transmission.
The Midget is capable of cruising at 65-70mph with no harm to the engine. It does sound rather busy at high rpms and is worse for the driver than the car
