blown transfer case?

What are the syptoms of a blown transfer case? Right now i get alot of squeeking coming when i step on the gas. it has alot of play in the steering and when i make a sharp turn it clanks really loud. also i seem like i dont have power and is seems like my bravada is pulling toward the passenger side and the wheel just doesnt feel right. also i get a burning smell after the car heats up. i noticed that the inside of the drivers side tire has a dried up red substance all over it and it still has a sulfer like smell.

a lot of symptons here, what year and how many miles? did you buy it new or recently? how long have you been having problems?

1997 bravada 145000 miles. i had it for 2 years. it started acting up about 2 weeks ago when i had a flat and put my spare on. it was acting up really bad i thought the spare went flat i pulled over and it was a little low. by the time i got to work (about 5 miles after i checked the tire) i has smoke coming from underneath and it smelled sort of like natrual gas. i tried driving it just around the parking lot at my work but it wasnt driving right. so i had it towed to my house and that is where i stand right now. i was looking to find out if anyone has any idea what this could be so i can get an idea on how much it would cost to fix.

Possibly the left outer CV joint, although it's difficult to diagnose without driving and listening to it myself. Is the boot torn?

is the boot sort of a rubber piece if so yes it is torn. i forgot to mention that my brakes are really touchy.

The boot is a rubber-like material and looks similar to an accordian. The way it is designed, it circulates the grease through the CV joint while driving. Once the boot is torn, it squirts the grease out and allows dirt to come in. When this happens, the joint will self destruct in a very few miles. A "clattering" or "clicking" sound while turning is a classic symptom. The least expensive way to repair it is to replace the half shaft. Remanufactured ones are readily available for around $50 USD and include both CV joints. When the grease squirts out, it is entirely possible that the grease would end up on the brake rotor and pads making the brakes feel "touchy".

i think O.M. is right. change out the the half shaft and see if that fixes your problem. not an easy job, but cheaper than a transfer case. the DIY link is here:

or it could be worse if you have one of those "doughnut" spares. Maxwedge posted this earlier this month: "The spare should be the same height as the rest of the tires or you will burn up the transfer case." see his post here:
