Hi guys/gals! OK - The previous owners of the BMW said it was
the starter - EVEN gave me a new starter that they had tested
and was ok - told me to take it and get it replaced because there
is this ONE bolt my Husband said was impossible to get to. So I
did and the mechanic at the shop said it wasn't my starter it was
the flywheel - they even showed me one they had laying around
and they said some of the teeth were missing thats why I could
keep trying and it would start. So they didn't even change the
starter but they didn't charge me either. I think I have bigger
probs than that - Car wouldn't pass smog all levels high especially
NO sky high. The guy who was going to put the starter in said
change o2 sensor then retest and if fails again change cat
converter? Do you guys agree? And also mostly all my dash
lights are on how do you make them turn off? See Pic PLEASE!
Thanks

Did the old starter make a grinding or zinging noise when you tried to start it? If that starter was bad and they continued to use it, it is very possible the teeth on the flywheel are mashed/broken. Change the o2 sensor and tune it up, should be fine unless you have bigger problems like the injectors dumping fuel into the intake.Good Luck...

The O2 sensor is a good place to start. Also nnsure that the cold start valve isn't leaking. That will also cause you to have a hard time passing your smog testing. You may also end up having to change out the catalytic converter.

Hi NOx is from running too lean. There is a way to adjust the AFM so that there is more fuel delivered to run richer and lower the NOx. Do a google search for AFM adjustment and you'll find the information you need.

To reset the Service Indicator lights, jumper in pin 1 to pin 7 on your diagnostic connector. Do this with the key turned off. After you jumper the two pins, turn the ignition to ACC without starting the car. keep it there for 3 seconds to reset the oil lights and 9 seconds to reset the service lights. Here's a URL with a pic of the diagnostic connector.
