sketchy trans flush procedure

After reading how to flush trans fluid, (running motor in D w/e-brake on, return cool. hose off dumping into bucket) How about the open line/nipple to trans? That has to stay open? Won't it suck air to trans? Must you pour in fluid about as its going out? Can fluid be flushed by gravity with return cooling hose off?
