As I wipe a tear from my eye, I bring you the latest, and greatest news of all time.
BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT® AND LEGENDARY PICTURES
TO PRODUCE LIVE-ACTION WARCRAFT® MOVIE
Fantasy game franchise played by millions worldwide to become major motion picture
IRVINE, Calif. -- May 9, 2006 -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and Legendary Pictures today announced that they have entered into an agreement to develop a live-action film based on Blizzard Entertainment®'s award-winning Warcraft® universe. Based on the terms of the agreement, Legendary Pictures has acquired the movie rights for the best-selling game universe, and both companies are now focused on translating the high-quality Warcraft entertainment experience to the big screen.
"We searched for a very long time to find the right studio for developing a movie based on one of our game universes," said Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. "Many companies approached us in the past, but it wasn't until we met with Legendary Pictures that we felt we'd found the perfect partner. They clearly share our high standards for creative development, and because they understand the vision that we've always strived for with our Warcraft games, we feel there isn't a better studio out there for bringing the Warcraft story to film."
"One of our goals at Legendary Pictures has been to bring heroic stories to life in groundbreaking ways, and it's inspiring to work with a company such as Blizzard that takes that approach with each of its products," stated Legendary Pictures chairman and CEO Thomas Tull. "The Warcraft universe is possessed of such a rich mythology and, as such, serves as an ideal platform as we go about translating that universe into what we intend to be a major event film."
Blizzard's Warcraft games have developed a loyal following since the series debuted in 1994. Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness™, released in 1995, won multiple Game of the Year awards and is still considered one of the best games ever made, and Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos™ broke multiple sales records when it launched in 2002. World of Warcraft®, Blizzard's latest entry in the critically acclaimed franchise, has quickly become one of the world's most popular online games, with more than 6 million paying customers worldwide.
"From our first Warcraft game to our latest novels, our intention has always been to develop a rich fantasy universe that could support stories and products in many forms," stated Chris Metzen, Blizzard Entertainment's vice president of creative development. "In addition to being a truly rewarding experience for us, the creation of this motion picture also feels like a natural next step for the Warcraft universe."
"It's not always the case that interactive game properties lend themselves to proper adaptation to film," said Jon Jashni, Legendary Pictures' chief creative officer. "We are intending to approach this as we would the adaptation of a best-selling novel: respect the essence of all that it is but also build upon that fertile base while translating it into a new medium."
Further details about the upcoming Warcraft movie, including director, cast, and targeted release date, will be revealed in the months ahead.

Probably because it will have a whole lot of hype. The thing is it, like Warcraft, will suck on the big screen like every single other video game movie.
With that said though I like the idea of rather seeing Starcraft than Warcraft. Starcraft was probably the best game from Blizzard yet they fucked all their fans over and made Warcraft 3 and now they're focusing on Diablo 3 when the Starcraft sequal should be their main concern :disappoin

I love starcraft.. honestly more so than Warcraft, but since there is no "StarCraft 2: Reign of Kaos" I had to go and get WC3.. and expansion.. because Blizzard is PC game creator god and all, but yeah a Starcraft movie would be more interesting.. especially if it continued on the story from where Brood War left off. Diablo though would be crazy too, but oh well.. I wonder if this movie will flop.

warcraft movie..... hmmmm isnt the pool getting a little crowded in the genre for now? i can see this ending up like alexander ( although the movie sucked) the pool was too crowded that is gladiator, troy, and others. this will have to compete not only in the minds of the gamers, but against movies too ...ie narnia (never saw the show but read the books), lord of the rings and the like. bottom line unless it contends they should wait.
to throw in another angle to this, i hear that people are talking about this being the final year of PC's have a decent role in the gaming world, since the new game systems all use online. im not sure of the truth in it though.

that's been delayed indeffinitly because they're looking into their options for the new consoles. they were supposed to come out with it like last year for all 3 but then droped the gamecube, then decided to postpone it.
anyways, this movie's gonna flop, the gamers will be glued to their computer monitors playing WoW.

I don't see how starcraft would make a better movie. I don't even remember a story from it, but I also haven't played it in years. If anything, Blizzard should use the story from WCI for it and do it in the cutscences from WCIII with that nice high level detail.

If I see one videogame-based movie in the theaters, it'll probably be Splinter Cell. At least a movie like that can borrow just as heavily from the spy genre (James Bond, M:I, etc.) without being untrue to the game.
As far as Warcraft, I don't really know much about it, as I've successfully kept myself distanced from the MMORPG world pretty much since the beginning of when they actually became widespread in their use. I've always wanted to try some of those games out, but I simply for the life of me CANNOT understand where you people get the time to play those things! Maybe if I was still in High School or something, but those days are long gone. That being said, the movie will probably do OK, but nothing special. I have a feeling it'll be a SpecialFX-fest -- but little else.

Sweet, I know the chuck norris thing is played out, but
Man, he would perfect for the role of Snake (anyone seen Delta Force).
But, as I sit here at 9:23 PM, I think; has there ever been a good movie based off of a game?
Final Fantasy - was completely off tangent with the game.
Doom - also strayed alot from the game, and just plain sucked (turn into monsters based on how good you were -WTF?)
Bloodrayne - haven't seen it, but looked shitty, and apparently it sucked.
Tomb Raider - never played the games so I have no idea. But the movies themself...suck
Resident Evil - it was ok, but the second one had too much "I'm such a baddass killer" to it.
Thats all i can think of.
So far, movies based on games have sucked.
I predict this one will suck also; that or it will be a clone of Lord of the Rings.
A MGS movie should be ok. There is a lot of material to work off of (the original NES storylines were also great).
A guy fighting a huge mech would be fantastic -when has that ever been done, in any movie?
Chuck Norris could take it out though. :bigthumb:

Maybe. AVP was rumored for 10 years before it was released. Of course, in my professional opinion, it sucked. There really should have been any humans and if there were, wtf are they scientists. bleh!
screw Ghost, I wanted Starcraft 2 on my computer! Starcraft is so much better and Halo will probably suck because of the plot. When the game is in so much detail, just like MGS, how you gonna line the movie up with that and not mess up the series?
Oh well, we'll just wait and see. I mean, Doom. How could you ruin it? Oh, make it a B rated movie with the The Rock in it. KILL MONSTERS! You'd think it's hard to do...

That would suck if he never took off his mask.
Its understandable in the game, but in "4th person POV" of a movie, we would miss too much of the acting (wouldn't be able to see emotion).
But if Vin Diesel is going star, I suppose it would be the same as wearing a mask :)
I thought this film wasn't going to be live action; I heard it was all suppose to be CGI, similar to that Final Fantasy movie.

Doom was a lot like the game, and did follow the story line extremely well, as well as managing to portray the entire movie as the game just about.
Starcraft: Ghost is cancelled according to IGN (http://xbox.ign.com/objects/489/489845.html) but the game still appears in the Product catalogue in the World of Warcraft game cards.
However, March of this year, Blizzard said they have "indefintely postponed" the game and will be focusing the game on PS3 and Xbox 360.

There you have it, the Warcraft movie PROVEN to be a fucking awesome box office smash that will leave half the civilized world in ruins and the slow corruption of the Burning Legion will soon take over what little humanity we have left, only one warrior must be brave enough to put an end to the destruction.
