I have read all the fuel issues with the astro and still have not found a proven solution to this problem, any ideas?.
Started running rough then escalated to barely running only in idle. Changed the fuel filter and ran great for 4-5 hours next day went back to sputtering and stalling untill finally will only run on idle. 2nd filter (Pep Boys 7- $8). changed ran great entire day, next day back to them same old thing with one difference the cat was glowing cherry red at the intake side. I removed all the cat guts no more cherry red but still does not go beyond idle.
Does anyone have an answer?

Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the test port near the rear of the engine (dog house needs to be removed).

I'd suggest cutting the old filter and seeing if they're plugged by "something" from the fuel tank. After all, it ran with a new filter twice.
As for pressure, my '97, (is a '99 the same?) they need more pressure to start than run, and a GM service rep told me "minimum 60 psi" to run. I had 59 psi on the guage I borrowed. I had starting problems, but it ran fine after starting. With a new fuel pump, but no pressure reading, (I returned the guage), it starts and runs fine.
