lumina troubles with acceleration

Hello i recently purchased a 94 lumina euro 3.1 and put a 90 model engine in it also 3.1. the engine ran great in the other vehicle but...... after vacumm lines trouble and replacing the iac and trottle body new plugs and wires the car idles great and intially runs great but has no power its is slow to accelerate and shakes a little when you are hard on it. yesterday i sat in it and pressed the gas and at four thousand rpms it backfired a couple times. also it smells kinda rich in full but i am not very auto savy but tryng to learn. i am not sure if i over looked something perhaps? i really like the car i hope to get it going so that i have a way around with my 11 month old daughter. i would really appreiciate any suggestions....thanks

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the 90 engine will not work in your 94 vehicle. The 94 spec engine has a CMPS (camshaft position sensor) that the 90-93 spec engine did not have, and two CKPS's (crankshaft position sensors, one in the back of the block like the 90-93, and one behind the harmonic balancer). The 90-93 engine only has one CKPS. The computer is not receiving a signal from the non-existant cam position sensor and 2nd crank sensor, and is therefore not able to adjust fuel delivery and timing advance. Basically, this engine cannot be used in your car without extensive mods to the wiring harness, ECM, etc....

well that's not good news at all...thank you for your time...i am unsure of the year of the engine we were told 90 but in a side conversation it was stated that they didn't make that engine in 90 so maybe i got the year wrong....boy i sure hope so...i'll look for the sensors..here's hoping they're there...thanks again

what's the moral of the story? do your hw before you purchase and do engine conversions.

hey there it turns out that the engine did match up and that all in all it was the ignition control module ... i found out because number 3 and 6 weren't firing..and replaced the coil and it still didn't fire sooooo here i am now with a new icm and a great running car.....thanks again.
