weeeellllllllll

as you know Turbos run off the Engines exhaust, thus thats why theres a bit of a 'lag' when you gun it .. needs time to build pressure. Ok with that said...

A Supercharger, is driven off the engines crank, not exhuast. Thus its power band is linier. Meaning It has no lag, its always there.

The crank turns a pully via a belt, which turns a turbine which compresses the air into the intake manifold..and it does all its magic... blah blah blah you get the picture i hope? Thats the lazymans version of it all...

Hope i was of some assistance.

BTW Beemers are cool, my step dad has a '02 BMW R1150R.
Myself, I have a '98 Yamaha Seca II (600cc)

your forgetin to mention that a super charger also robs the power you gain in the process cause its takin up energy to drive the turbine

Lets not forget that superchargers provide instant power as well, where as turbos have to spool up. not knocking turbos or anything, they're great... but yall always make it sound like superchargers suck or something. I have actually seen many imports (tegs and hondas) running superchargers as well.

oh.. and by the way, superchargers aren't robbing any more power than turbos. turbos inhibit a naturally free flowing exhaust ("robbing" as you call it) using some HP - robbing is kind of a stupid term to use in this case... after all, they are providing more HP than they are taking away.

I don't get what you're trying to say about the robbing in a supercharger. Are you saying the vehicle starts off strong and then seems to slow down near the end of a race?

turning the pullie takes some power, but...it takes so little in comparison to how much is put in, its like turbo- add 100hp, supercharger, add 75hp (just making example, I know its way off)

But, that turbo is 4000rpm up, the supercharger is constant.

we already covered that TV haha, but yes its very true. A point not to be forgetten

As for the "robbing" issue, it doesnt rob you anything more than maybe 1 to 2 hp MAYBE 3 OH JEZE IM gonna DIE cause im losing 3 HP all over my powerband... OH WAIT! Im getting a 80% gain throughout my powerband AS well... hmmm its not robbing.. its HELPIN! WOOOO!

Thus, Turbos and Superchargers do not rob power, they Add. If they robbed power then we wouldnt use them would we? What robs power is Powersteering, AC, and Fans those are all driven off of the engine if you want to be like 103.4% racer guy you need to loose the Powersteering... not like a little Armstrong Steering cant cure!
AC... if you get hot, roll the winder down! Stop yer bitchin!
The Fan... electric fans are better... drawn no power from engine and well.. they're just Better. Just dont blow a fuse and be Fan-less or you're little racer might become a paperweight.

Or you can be like my friends and swear by the Air-cooled V8....... Yeah it doesnt work the best... but they swear by it!

or just swear as their temp flys high :flipa:

Well since we are debating turbo vs. super and the question has been answered I will put my two cents in.

I feel that a turbo is by far better than a super. Here's why:

Turbo:

Pros:

You will, 9 times out of 10, get more power from a turbo.
You can put a turbo on any car.
You can retain descent gas mileage.
Turbo lag can be reduced greatly and even eliminted my using N2O.
You can have a turbo spool up LONG before 4000 RPM, hell, my car is stock and it spools at about 3000 RPMs. I know of people that get them to spool at around 2500.

Cons:

Cost.
Spool time, which can be reduced or eliminated.
Not a bolt on, must be installed by a pro.

Super:

Pros:

Instant power.
Cost.
Easy to install.

Cons:

Works off the engine, robs power.
Since whenever you push the gas the super is boosting you get greatly reduced gas mileage.
There has to be a kit for you car, you can't just supercharge any car.

Besides there is nothing like the BOV pssssh sound or the sound of that impeller spinning at 160,000 RPMs when it spools up. Given the choice between turbo and super, I will ALWAYS take a turbo. It is just far better IMO.

PSSHHH Whateverrrrrrrrrrrrr!!

hahah, true most of what you said is correct.

Except cost, Turbos and Superchargers run almost the same in price. But like you said.. your car has to have a kit for the SC. Or you can just YAM IT ON and hope for the best! hahah.

But... would you still race a '68 Camaro with a Blower (supercharger) sticking through the hood? (extreme case, but still a good one!)

They make decent power for being 100 year old technology. I wouldnt turn my back on one yet...

You do bring up a good point. On a good old V8 I would take a five point blower over a turbo any day of the week.

How much does a supercharger kit cost? Last time I checked to turbocharge a car with the same boost I am running would cost you towards the $8,000 - $10,000 dollar range.

that much money? dangg...

I was looking at like... some basic as hell Turbos that make... well lets say i make more PSI when i eat Beans.:(

and they costed about the same as SC's.

Well i stand corrected.... sorta!

uhm... the amount taking is nothing compared to what you gain, supercharing is much better considering the pros and cons of turbo charging... the only reason ppl turbo because of cost... if supercharging was cheaper most people would have superchargers...

i personally cant wait till someone comes up with a 'DIY' supercharging kit, that'd be awesome

Uhh, have you reaad ANY of the posts in here, namely mine? Turbo cost more and is harder to install. They do make DIY kits for supers, that is why they call them bolt ons.

Umm, I doubt a Supercharger kit is available for an 83 Corona.

I could be wrong.

could you post some sites of kit makers? that'd me much appreciated, i'm looking to transplant a 3L V6 into my corona, (which will fit nicely coz the mounts are the same as the ones on the VL commodores), and i was considering a supercharger...

thx in advance
