Fast Food

I bought a fascinating book on the weekend and some of the things in it are down right scary. It’s called “Fast Food Nation”. Basically a book about McDonalds and all those fast food chains. I haven’t read very much of it yet, but one of the things that I read today really shocked me. This is a quote directly from the book “the typical American now consumes approx 3 hamburgers and four orders of french fries every week.” Now that’s a scary thought!
I have a strange feeling that once I finished reading this book, I won’t want to go near a mass produced hamburger again! :uhoh:

Its a very good book, and has become quite well known, its mostly about the excess consumerism assciated with the fast food industry, and the gross negative effects it has had both on western society, and the 3rd world nations that supply a lot of the meat etc.
Sections from it are still used in many Uni papers, and it has in the past been used as required reading.
That said, I went with a mate to get some lunch for us and her b/f on sunday. We both got some sushi, and he got a cheese burger, a Big Mac, and Kiwi Burger, with a large fries, and large coke. He ate the lot.
So its not just the yanks that eat to much, they might have the highest rate of obesity in the world, but we have the fasted growing rate.

I spend so much time on the Internet now, I don't have time to go and get a burger, but I'm off tomorrow so maybe I'll go get a Tommy's double burger with chilli!

It’s a shame that we eat so poorly hear, but I liken it to drugs. It screws with your body, but its your body to screw up.

The really disturbing thing is that is the average. That doesn’t take into consideration all the people that don’t eat any at all, which means that some people are eating a lot more than that each week.

i honestly eat 6-10 hamburgers a week, and 4-8 orders of fries. why is this such a bad thing? the food at the grocery store comes from the same places, and besides when i cook i always get sick

I hate to say it but I've heard all the stories about what goes into the food and all that, and I still go to those places to eat, it hasn't put me off.

You must be a young gun. When I was younger, in the way distant past, I too had a cast iron stomach. Drinking and partying EVERY NIGHT till 2:30 a.m. the go back to work at 8:00 a.m. and the weekends, that was a whole different story. I was out so much the electric company came out to test my electric meter and asked if I had tampered with it. Enjoy your youth now, CAUSE OLD AGE SUCKS!

Anyway, I don't know why people even bother with fast food, when cafe's can get you Panini's, home-made steak pies and Gourmet sandwhiches for a similar price to fast food and the waiting time is half that of most fast food places :)

Not here in my town. There is fast food, and there are restaurants. Biiiiiig difference in price. East Texas has very little variety.

Oh, how I long for better conditions here in America!
We have "fast food" ($2-4 & about 5 minute wait), then we have "restaurants" ($10-30 & about 40 minute wait). The cafes in America just serve coffee (even the coffee is "fast" and fake-tasting).
Nothing in between :( So, I don't really think we are "lazy"... we don't really have a choice! Once again, this illustrates the fact that Americans aren't really free. It is an illusion, folks!

Oh, and how old is old? When should we AF'ers start to be concerned about "the battle of the buldge"?

That´s so true.. I have a lot of $ right now because of a new job so I eat a lot of fast food. But I only eat sandwiches, bread from a bakery..
Not that McCrap stuff... This way I get better food and I don´t get fat that easy (I´m not saying I can´t get fat)
