used trannys from japan

Several places sell trannys and engines that were used in Japan and supposedly have very low miles. Supposedly Japan has a vast supply of used 4g parts. Supposedly you can get a used tranny from there with less than 80K on it.
Can I rely on this? If I could be sure a DX transmission had less than 80k on it I'd buy it. (my car has rust and it's most probably not worth getting an SI trans)
Or should I just spend whatever more it costs for a rebuild, a rebuild that will not wear so quick.
Does anyone recomend an importer on the East Coast?
thanks

i just bought my engine and tranny off of jdmcustoms. All these places own junkyards and emissions stations in Japan so they ship them over here once theyve been deemed over the hill. 30-50k on most of the parts. Should be arriving friday as i hope to install it all this weekend, ill let ya kno how good it works out but they seem pretty reliable.

Thanks Bull,
Here is a a reprint of yesterday's post to the 4rth generation 4 door yahoo club:
Yesterday I was just about ready to have a used jdm trans shipped from California to Philly. But then i found another place that sells the same except it's only 50 miles away. But then i found another place that sells the same except it's only 5 miles away.
Kind of amazing, I was about to order something to be shipped from California to Philadelphia. Then a few hours later I'm walking through a wharehouse full of JDM engines and trannys.
Why did my Google searches not find this place earlier???? Because for every one legitimate business out there there's 100 websites that are advertisements selling shit that you don't need.
Sorry for the rant.
The place in Philly is sold out of the trans. The guy there said he can't keep cable clutches in stock. (which is funny because elsewhere they don't seem to be in demand) But that might explain why my google searches didn't find this philly outfit, because they didn't have the tranny that i needed.
I bought one from Japanese Engines, Inc (50 miles away); $150.

They have a solid sales record on ebay. I'll let you guys know how
this works out.

If you're planning to keep your car for a good while then I suggest you rebuild the tranny. Buying used trannys...no matter how "low" the miles does not mean they're reliable. They could be abused which could be a problem. I would just get the trans rebuilt, so that way you trust it because you know the history of it :)

Thanks Mellow,
But like i said, i have no mechanical skill. And shops want over $1,000 for a rebuild. If i knew more people in the 4rth gen community i might shop around more.
If i was in Cali i pobably would have found someone who could do a rebuild for cheap.
Sincerely appreciate your input.

Thats a little bit too much. It shouldn't cost more than 500 including labor. I've seen shops do it for 300 bucks. Keep searching.

Mellow,
Again, much appreciate the advice. Thanks.
The guy i have now is going to put in the new used tranny and a new clutch for a little more than half what anther guy would charge. This guy came recomended by a respected friend/acquantance.
I might be able to find a better deal. But how long will it take?
Anyway, i picked up the used trans today.
Wish me luck.

JDM Transmission is in. But i'm getting a loud noise and vibration at start up. It doesn't seem related to the trans.
One fellow listened and guessed maybe a bad motor mount. He stated something sounds loose-- that it sounds like the engine and the car are not firmly connected.
The fellow who put the trans in replaced a motor mount while doing it.
Anyone ever have a problem like this? I hope it's not expensive to fix.
Anyone have any suggestions? Ideas?
Thanks

Thanks to all who gave me advice and suggestions.
One motor mount was found to be loose. After tightening the car immediately sounded and felt much better.
Having said that, I can say that I'm very very happy with the low miles transmission that i bought from jdm engines. Trans shifts smooth and quiet. Way way cheaper than a rebuild. They have a solid Ebay rating. 97.8% is an excellent rating in the used parts market.
Paterson, NJ. a few miles out of manhattan.
