The coolant sensor for the 84 H-engine is in the T-stat housing. I don't have anything in the block by the starter except the (water jacket drain) plug.
To be fair, it could be a temp sensor, but on my 92 SBC C1500, there was a knock sensor where the plug would've gone.

Yes, that's the knock sensor. The coolant temperature sensor is generally located in the thermostat housing. Has a black and a yellow wire connecting to it.

That would be the location of the temperature sending unit on any other small block. Is that what that is? The sending unit and temp sensor are two different things - the sending unit displays a temp on the car's coolant temp gauge while the temp sensor tells the computer how hot the engine is.

Now that you said "sending swith" I believe your right. should this have 1 or 2 wires connected to it

If your vehicle has the heavy duty cooling package (RPO V08) it will be a little different. On the right (passenger) side of the block is a detonation sensor. Above that, in the right cylinder head (between the spark plugs) is the secondary cooling fan sensor. The left (driver side) head has the temperature sending unit for the dash instrument.
