Knock Sensor

I have not read a clear answer on this problem yet. Maybe someone can help me understand.
Check engine light is on and I had it read. It is the knock sensor code. From what I have noticed, the car still runs well and has not ran bad at all.
I hate this light and from what I have read on many boards is that it may not be the engine knocking and could be the sensor going bad.
Well, some suggest buying a new sensor and istalling it will fix the problem.
Has anyone done this and the code not come back?
I have done a tune up on the car and I still get the code back after a few days of driving. That is after I have gotten the code cleared.:banghead:
All suggestions will help.
Thanks,
Dalm

I replaced the knock sensor in a Maxima. It had to be done to pass the state emissions inspection. The shop told me I wouldn't feel any difference in performance and he was right. Since it was done the code hasn't come back.
But I also own a Altima and the knock sensor just caused the check engine light to come on just in time for this months inspection. Dealers want around $150.00 but I bought mine on ebay for $95.00 delivered.
good luck

Knock Sensors usually don't turn on a check engine light . Knock sensors function is to retard or advance timing to keep engine running smooth so it won't knock .. If it senses a knock in the engine it will adjust timing automatically so it will not knock. I know the dealer wants a lot for those sensors. The correct way to fix the problem is to replace it . gl :)

Thank you for your replies.
It looks like I should replace the sensor.
Is it as hard to get to as the water pump bolts?

I believe its on the rear of the motor by the oil filter

It's not that bad, only 1 12mm bolt, but it's a little tricky to get out and back in . It's right above the oil filter , it's easier to get it by taking the filter off

listen to fixunissan, On my 96 the knock sensor would not eluminte the check light, I never replaced and never had any problems, you may have another code?I thought it was pretty difficult to get to as my hand could barely touch it and autozone wnted 280 dollars for a new one!You should probally run good gas to help prevent spark knock though.

Could you please share where exactly the knock sensor is in a 1998 Altima? Thanks.

If you look above the oil filter you'll see a black sensor .. thats it. it could be tricky for someone who doesn't know how to get to it, to replace it.. shouldn't take more than 35 mins .. thats giving you bitch time also, cause it can be a bitch to get back in..gl:)
