sohc zc vs. rebuilding

Has anyone purchased one of these sohc zc's? There suppost to be low mileage, but why do they pull them if thats so. If there just salvage, there sure are a lot of them. Anyway, debating swap for newer engine or just rebuilding mine. I'm sure I could use the newer crank and cam, but can repair mine. Just would be easier to swap accessories, and do tune-up.

My neighbor bought a SOHC ZC. It's a nice engine. It's stronger than the stock D16A6 and it was sure cheaper than rebuilding his worn out tired motor.

i've had a sohc zc in my car for about a year, and it takes quite a beating. i've got my computer chipped and the cutoff is at 9000 rpm and i hit 8000-8500 rpm all the time. and i mean all the time. my friend was behind me the other day and said i blow a little bit of blue when i do a high rev shift but otherwise nothing. so its been a strong engine for me. i took it to the track once and ran 15.7 @ 90mph with a 1 sec reaction time. oh thats with i/h/e chip and dx tranny. hope that helps

1 sec? Did you take a nap when the tree lit up?

I believe the SOHC ZC is about the same as a d16a6 with maybe a point or two higher compression. That engine was not designed to rev that high and eventually you're going to float the valve train or just snap a belt or something.
Even with the 1 sec reaction time, that's probably the best you'll make of it... maybe a 15.5. I'm willing to bet though that your chip isn't doing anything but raising your rev limit. I'd like to race you straight up at the track.

I know, I know, but it was the first time i've raced at a track. I only got 3 runs in. the first run i didnt think the track was gonna be that sticky so when i let the clutch out i popped out of first gear:banghead: . the second run i was a little excited so i false started. and thats why the 1 sec raction time on the third.

obviosly the engine wasnt designed to rev that high, but i've been doing for a year now and im just starting to get a little smoke. so they are tough engines, i am a little worried about the timing belt though as i didnt change it when i put the engine in and who know how many miles where on the damn thing from japan. they say 30k but they always say 30k. anyway i dont really care these engines are so cheep anyway and so easy to change. i didnt notice any power from the chip, but it is nice to go 120kph in 2nd gear though from the extra revs. also my gas milage went way up so that alone is worth it.

Well, since I found the answer to my question about these supposed low-mileage engines on another post, I believe the ZC is the way to go. Although understandable, it's hard to believe that Japanese law requires for all inuse vehicles to be low mileage.
Re: GM Syncromesh gear oil
as for the jap engines not having low miles.....they have to, it's the law. when it gets to either 50 or 60,000mi they straight take your car from you. we got a front clip for our ITR....its complete with speedo. that engine only has 11,000mi (17000km).
