I've got a 99 dodge stratus 2.4L with 148k miles on it. recently it started acting up. It will lose engine power while driving as if the fuel has been cut off. then it will slow down untill the rpm reaches 0 and the engine would stall. this will happen every couple miles. it seems like the fuel pump gets shut down while driving and its using up the fuel in the lines. It will start up again after you stop and hear the fuel pump activating while turning the ignition. anyone have had the same problem and found a solution to this?

Probably is your fuel pump. Dont let mechancis say that fuel pumps "will either work or they wont". Thats BS..they are electrical and can intermitently short out. With that kind of mileage, repplace Both the fuel pump and the fuel filter. Might be one or the other, but wouldnt hurt to replace both.

Thank you. I also found out recently that when I hit the gas for a second or 2-3 and than coast for a 2-4 seconds and I keep this patern going the car will actually keep driving for a longer period. It will stall when I deviate from this patern. I just don't understand how this way of driving could actually help. I am trying to narrow down on the problem. Please respond

The above doesnt help me any. Keep in mind that the gov't has been screwing with the gasoline in the last few weeks. They have removed an additive to the gas that is supposedly causing some kind of polution. This is causing some cars "check engine" lights to come on. Maybe on yours its affecting the performance, but i doubt it. If you want to go the cheap route, just replace the fuel filter and see what happens, but again, i doubt its that..more likely the pump

Second thought. since you hear the fuel pump clicking, it might be trying to suck gas in a vacuum state (ie clogged filter..making pump work harder) If you havent changed the filter recently..try that first. Im not sure where its located since i havent replaced mine yet at 124k miles :) on my 2000 Stratus

The filter is on top of the tank, when you buy it it comes with the first 4 or so inches of the pressure line. So you will have to drop the tank to get to it.
