I am buying a used 2004 X5 with 16,000 miles....within the first 13,000 miles the car burned one quart of oil. Should this be a red flag or is that common with these vehicles

I do not think that is a problem. I would change my oil at the 5-8k range.

This is a similar issue with my cousin’s 2002 X5 with 3.0 engine.
I did my best @ 95 k when I first got to touch that engine. Oil cap was all covered in gunk from the oil burning, there was plenty of blow-by and oil was black as black can be. :screwy:
I drained the oil (seen how dirty it was I did not use the seafom or any kind of engine flush) refilled with fresh oil, changed the filter, ran it for about 15 minutes, drained it and filled with Amsoil long life and added a full container of Restore. After about 3k oil level dropped 1.5 qrts. I changed the oil again and this time added CD2 oil treatment to limit the burning of oil. This was @ 98k. Next 3k it held up and @ 101, I thought (silly me) that I somewhat resolved the problem, but now it has 107k I just went to visit her and she told me that truck would not start yesterday morning and she called the AAA and they were able to start it. Level of the oil was at the end of the dipstick and we had to add almost 3! Quarts to it in order to bring to level. I told her that this engine is at the last leg and she needs to think (or should of thought already) what she is going to do when it actually ceases and dies. But I think I’ve done her a disservice by temporarily reviving this beast, because every time I do it she says “May be it won’t die” :naughty: and keeps driving it and neglecting it.
What should I tell her to do with this truck? We live 2 hours apart and I can’t take care of this truck as it should be. She is upside-down on it so she can’t trade it.
Thanks,
