anyone polish through the clearcoat?

I know it sounds like something a compulsive polisher might do,
however,the truck(2001,4Runner)has never been buffed to my knowledge,and now has a tiny spot where I went through the clear on one of the fender flares while only removing someones paint from the surface;no chips or scratches were there,and I was using some pretty tame finishing polish.
I'm used to much better quality than that,and haven't seen anything like this since I've owned Toyotas.

I would be willing to bet that "someones paint" took your clear coat off more so than your polish.
