1989 Chevy C1500 Idle Problem

I am having a problem with my chevy truck. It runs fine when it is in park but as soon as I put it in reverse or drive it starts to hesitate and eventually stalls. It also stall when I have the truck in drive or reverse and I put the headlights on. I checked the alternator and it seems fine. Any help would be appricated.
