Will a 98 Sunfire interchange with a 97?

I have a 97 sunfire, and found a motor in a 98 at the salvage yard, will the 98 moter interchange with the 97? if not what kinda of changes/repairs am i looking at? thanks.

yep, it should be a direct swap, as long as they are the same motors, ie. 2.2L and 2.4L

Which motor,2.2 or 2.4?.If it is the 2.2,it will not fit.The book says(Hollander)1996 and 1997 only.The 1998 and up 2.2 is the updated version.If it is the 2.4,yes it will fit.I believe the 1998 and up have a differant knock sensor.It has a bolt holding it on.

the 2200 and the 2.2L are the same size (same motor really), just updated to perform a little better (I've had both, and the block are identical on the outside). the sensors for the 2.2L and the 2200 should interchange. At most, you might not use a couple sensors or have to move a connector.

The 2.4L will direct swap as well, to a current 2.4L car. Heck he could do a little wiring work and bolt in a 2.3L if he has the 2.4L now.

The knock sensor is differerant on a 1998 and up 2.4,the mounting of the knock sensor is differant and it is bolted on.You have to change the whole wiring harness if you put a 1998 and up 2.2 in a 1997 and that is a pain in the butt.

not the whole harness, just the engine bay harness and computer(maybe), add like an hour or two to the swap...

also, the book doesn't cover all the facts, like GM kept the sensors the same over a long time. that's why my 93 motor hooked right up to my 95 car. the knock sensor might be different, but the connector and the workings of the part might be identical. Case and point, my oil level sensor on my car, the 95 used a different sensor with a completely different way to hook it up, but my plug went right in and it worked just as it had before.
