i am currently looking for a 3000gt vr4, i want a nice little car that i can fix up and drive fast, but i am lost between the 6 speed and the 5 speed, is there a difference in top speed or acceleration or anything, is it really worth it getting the 6 speed, i think it would be nicer personaly, but you never know, so i thought i would ask the people that i am sure know the most, i just regestered and this is my first post, hopefully to be followed by many others, thank you and any help is great, thanks

Hey, welcome to AF.

As far as the 5spd/6spd, there really isn't much of a difference, it's more personal preference. The first gens were 5spd, the 2nd gens were 6spd, and I honestly think most buy them based on which styling htey like better, not which tranny.

I suggest you check out our FAQ, as it has alot of good stuff in there, and will probably answer alot of questions you may have.

Also check out www.autotrader.com and www.3si.org
You should be able to find some on there...just be prepared for the possibility of having to drive some distance to find one. I drove 400 miles roundtrip 2x to get mine.

the 5 speed is better for racing from dig, becouse it has higher gear ratio .the 6 speed is good too and it's faster if you race in the high way.the max speed on 5 speed is 180+mph and on 6speed is 200+ mph.i think you should buy 6 speed you will like it better.

Both are equally good for racing, on the highway or from a dig. The differences are so marginal it doesn't matter. THe only time one is better for racing than the other is if you are trapping 110+ in the 1/4, then the 5spd has the advantage of a taller 3rd gear, wherein the 6spd, you would have to make the extra shift to 4th right at the end of the track.

Also as far as I remember both are geared for well over 200mph. Not that it matters as few people have the hp to get up there. Both only have the power (stock) for 160.

And why would he like the 6spd better? So he can say his car has gearing capable of 235mph??

Don't know if its me but I found the 5speed better for launching. 6speed in my opinion is a lot better for highway speeding/Travel. If you are wanting to mode your car to 450+hp get the 6 if not stick with the 5. The trannys are stonger on the 6 you get the 4 bolt main and not the 2 found on the 5.

92.5+ had 5sp and 4 bolt main.

Very common mistake. The 6 speed has a stronger transfer case but even those who mod them have seen weak points.

What is your driving experience? So help me if you are some kid who is wanting to upgrade from mom and dads mercury to a VR4 I will go ballistic....

If you have experience with car then best of luck KYLE

Welcome to the forums. Like stated above, read the FAQs...all the FAQs lol...its extremely informative.

I too bought my VR-4 on www.autotrader.com. Looked for months, had to drive a ways, and didnt even get the color i would have preferred. These cars are not easy to come by, and few poeple, mechanics and dealers included, are very familiar with them. That being said, unless you have at least moderate mechanical know-how, know someone who does, of have a few grand set aside "just in case...", i would advise adainst the VR-4 model.

anyways...as far as transmission...i think its more of a preference thing. Like igo said, go with which body style you like better.

heres a link to the "cars for sale" section of the 3si forums. I wish i had known about it when i was VR-4 shopping. The forums are free, you just need a pay e-mail address when you register.
