Security System Installation

I was wondering how involved it would be to install power locks and a security system in my Taurus G. Does anyone have an idea where I may find out how to do so, as well as what parts/tools I will need?

It would be a lot easier and the system will work better if you just trade up to a car that is so equipped.

Just saw your post. Though I'd agree that it's just easier if the car already has power locks on it, it is still possible to add them on after the fact. It is *not* easy, however. It's very time consuming and if you've never done anything like it before, it can be quite overwhelming. Same with an alarm system. Alarms really aren't that hard to install, but if you're not used to seeing the mass of spaghetti for wires, it can seem like an impossible task. You only end up using about half the wires, but it's figuring out what wires to use and where they go that are the trick. If you've done electrical/mechanical work before and are so inclined....you'd probably be able to figure it out given enough time. If you've never done anything like this before...I'd take it to a trusted install shop. The money you spend there would be a lot less than spending it later *plus* anything that they may have to fix from the previous attempt.

I've installed power locks in about 5 vehicles that didn't originally have power locks, and installed numerous security systems. As InstallTech suggested, it can be done but it is quite time-consuming to do it properly. If you don't take your time, you are likely to have numerous problems that will pop up later.

The kits can be purchased for reasonable prices from places like Parts Express (www.partsexpress.com) and MCM Electronics (www.mcmelectronics.com). You may also need a tool for removing the door panels. You'll definitely need a test light and preferrably a digital multimeter (DMM) instead. You'll want solder and heatshrink as well as a soldering iron for making the wiring connections securely. You'll also need a drill to mount the lock motors and pliers or a vice for bending the lock actuator rods. Depending on how the actuator rods connect to the factory lock mechanism, you'll need either screwdrivers, hex keys, and/or small socket and combination wrenchs.

And of course prior wiring experience, familiarity with reading schematics and wiring diagrams, and schematics for your car.

If you've done a few of this type of install before, plan to give yourself a good day to do the lock and security system install. If this is your first such attempt, plan to give yourself the weekend, plus one or two Saturday's down the road to fix related issues that may crop up.
