Hello everyone, I am a noob to this forum but have an increasing interest in the VR4s. I found one near I live that is all in good shape execpt the motor. The guy doesn't really know what is wrong with it so I can not see how much it will cost. So I have some questions for the more experienced 3000GT owners. How much would a good, used 93 VR4 engine cost? If the car has blown a rod then how much for that? Thank you, ANY advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

New engine = into the $2K range
I'd just wait for one to come around that has all the parts working right.

to get a used VR-4 engine it will cost you no less than $2600 + shipping. and I wouldnt do it unless the car was atleast 3k or less.

alright thanks, the main reason I was going to look into a new engine is that it has 170k on it and the guy is clueless on whats wrong. Its also a good price, only 2500obo. Would it cost less to have it rebuilt?

maybe a lil' less, I'm not sure about the 4g, but I know that nissan's vg30DE engine (which is roughly the same thing) costs about $1-2000 to rebuild, maybe more...

okay, i found an engine on craigslist.com that would fit, the guy selling said i would just have to switch the turbos and buy a bearing kit and the engine would fit perfectly, he is selling it for 550. What would all that cost, assuming a mechanic did all the work: taking out the old engine, putting its turbos on the new one, then putting in the new engine with using the bearing kit?

Anyone have an idea on what actually might be wrong with it, he just emailed me back and wrote this:
"on the day it happened, the engine just made some wierd sound for like a minute but still runs. but the next day, when I try to start the car, it made some knocking sounds. a mechanic friend of mine said the turbo was fine but the engine might need a rebuild. hope this helps"
heres a link to pictures of the car if anyone is curious:

Yeah thats a bit vague...but knocking sounds usually means ur replacing the head or block, or whats in them.
