please tell me how to fix code p0501

First, does the speedometer still function? Is it moving smoothly, or is the indicator jerking around?
4-cylinder? V-6? 2WD/4WD? Automatic or manual trans?
Check the electrical connector at the VSS on the transmission (tailshaft housing). If the connector is clean and tight, and if the speedometer indicator is jerking or jumping, check the plastic driven gear on the end of the VSS shaft. The sensor has to be removed for this.
