civic engine noise - what is it?

have a new (used) 95 civic 1.6L (I think) @ 140k miles

engine makes a noise that sounds like ignition pinging on acceleration/revving

quiets quite a bit after running for a while

mechanics have told person I bought car from that this is characteristic for this engine and another friend said his son had a similar car with same sound and he just kept using oil additive

any guess what sound is? sounds like may be coming from upper part of engine.

could it be play in cam bearings? or other bearings?

timing belt was replaced at recommend. (90k)

suggestions?

Maybe valve noise. This happens to alot of Civics, including mine. Might want to take it to a shop and have a "valve adjustment" done. It shouldnt cost too much.

sounds logical - I assume this means replacing the valve spacer disks - anyone know of a web source for valve clearance specs?

You should probably get a Helm or Haynes manual, it has all of that information.

intend to do so - am new to honda engines but am looking forward to playing with this one

Have you ever concidered the heat shield on the cat or header. My 94 had a buzzing/rattle that sounded like a bad rod. It was the heat shields and Hondas are notorious for this.

Man those heat shields are horrible, mine crack and then vibrated against itself, every one thought my car was gonna blow up everytime I would drive by. sawzalls work wonders!!!
