ive had two different mech`s look at my 98 intrepid in the past four days and neither can tell me exactly whats wrong. one said maybe my cat converters are clogged with a $670 estimate but no guarantee to fix the problem. the other said he just doesnt know. sometimes my car will shut down when i stop at a light or something and on the highway all the gauges drop , then pick right back up like the car shut off because the check engine light chime sounds again when that happens. so i`m considering trying to get a diagnostic from the dealer.( help me obi-wan kenobi your my only hope!)

So...it shuts down and restarts itself? That's my first question because if thats the case I can only think it might be injectors/fuel pump maybe. But I can't think of any situation when a car would die then start itself up again.

IF it dies and then will start back up when you crank it, it might be the battery cables/terminals they tend to corrode and get loose, so cleaning them and retighting them might do the trick.

ok here it is ive changed the fuel pump on my decision , the computer on the dealers decision , and the battery on a mechanics decision . the car will still shut down sometimes and pick right back up in the same breath. im really getting lost , is the next step is to check injectors? for leaks or staying open

How about codes, did they find any when you brought it in? And what about now do you get any codes from the key turning it from off-on-off-on-off-on without cranking?

It may be a bad EGR solenoid getting stuck or being slow to open/close when at idle.

the only code it shows sometimes is (0172 )system too rich bank one , and yeah sometimes , it comes and goes as it pleases and when it goes away (the check engine light that is) the codes not there anymore , meineke said it was not the egr because thats what he thought and tested

Your o2 sensors can cause it to run to rich check the wires and make sure none of them have touched the exhaust and got a bare spot on the wire. As far as it shutting down mine did that and i changed the crank position sensor and that fixed the problem.

i have changed all 4 o2`s recently as well and the camshaft position sensor but not the crankshaft sensor , did you get a code for the crank sensor before you changed it?
