Is oil pressure light on? If not may be tensioner on your belts going bad . Check it before replacing pump, lot less expensive. Also if rattle occurs mostly at start up may be the common "Mazda rattle" associated with valve train wear and oiling issues. Switch to a good sythetic oil, use a little Seafoam when you change oil and see if that helps. BJ

On my 87 B2200 with timing belt After taking my front off the motor the Gear below the Idler pulley is the WATER pump it was shot the back part fell off when I got it out,I just cant believe the Haynes auto repair Manual chapter 2a-10 calls part#9 an oil pump book 61030 mazda pick ups 1972 thru 1993 and then in chapter 3-4 it calls the same part#9 a water pump.but its OK at least my oil pumps ok.

The oil pump is a trochoid gear type which is driven directly off the crankshaft. For future referance info you might want to check this out:

B2200 Tech Page (http://www.mazdatruckin.com/B2200/B2200.html)

Although its too late now there is also a coolant diagram which has a picture of the water pump and some other info.

Edit: Also the oil sending unit doesn't trigger the light until it gets to 3 psi or less. If it gets below about 10 psi your screwed anyways, that is why its called an idiot light because if you don't realize something is wrong before it comes on you probably shouldn't own a car.

H-m-m.I would be willing to bet there are a lot of responsible car owners out there who can't anticipate issues with their cars, but who certainly know that if an "idiot lite" comes on, it is time to find a shop or mechanic pronto to dx or fix the problem. My spouse being one of them and I guarantee that she knows plenty enough to own a car.BJ
