My neighbor has a 89 maxima that has a problem. When trying to start it it just clicks unless you keep turning the key back/forth then it will start and sometimes it will not crank at all. I think it might be the ignition switch. Can anyone tell me where it is located at and any other suggestions/ Thanks, gary

...start it it just clicks ...

Ign sw bad = no click = none.

If starter solenoid clics, then most probably solenoid contacts are burned. Go open hood, listen, look down the thick plus wire from batt... One may get new 20$ solenoid - but possibly the 5$ motor brushes also worn, depends 'on mile-age'. --->Easybuy 'new' starter: the new-used 'autozone' -class starters are typically unreliable.

If Inhibit relay clics, replace.

You can try one this and see what happens . The starter is right up front and is easy to see. Upon starting , With help , have a buddy start it while you tap the starter with a hammer , If it start , Then the contacts inside are worn and the starter would need to be replaced

Some clarifications:

1. "Click-problem": Starter Solenoid contacts burn and collect carbon inhibiting current flow. Hitting does NOT help that problem, only ign key play =repeated solenoid travel/hit may make a contact, allow current flow to motor.
- No need to replace STARTER. Solenoid 20$ replacement is enough.

2. "Click-less-problem": Ign key 'start' position contacts wear out causing -intermittent- noclick nostart.

3. "No-turn-problem": Motor burshes worn. (=clicks every time key is turned) This wear dust may jam the spring loaded brushes causing steady continuous nostart. Hitting motor side, may release jammed brush to make contact. If brushes have worn out, nohittin helps...
- Clicking key doesnt help motor to turn = NOT THIS problem.
- No need to replace STARTER. Brush cleanup or 4$ replacement is enough.

4. "Lots NOclickproblems", lost electrons : see given link

5. Mechanical problems, bendix failure etc (noisy rev, no turnover)... replace starter.

... ..
22. One may change starter, and inherit a 'new' old autozoneproblem...
