Cavalier Misfire

92 Cavalier, 2.2L 4 Cylinder, 2 coil waste-spark ignition system.

Engine developed a misfire, found the #1 plug wire rubbed on the #2 wire and the #1 wire burned about 1/2 way through. Replaced all 4 ignition wires. Misfire still present when driving. Only way that I can trace misfire is with an inductive pickup timing light, misfire intermittent on #1 and #4 cylinders at idle, increases on 1 & 4 as rpm is increased. Cylinders 2 & 3 are good. Replaced 1 & 4 ignition coil. Misfire still present on 1 & 4 at idle and at higher rpm. 2 & 3 good. Haven't changed plugs.

Any suggestions? Can the burned wire have damaged the coil drive circuit all the way back in the computer?

Thanks, Rick

Did you put in cheap plug wires from AutoZone or Advanced? If they are the cheap plug wires, take them back and get your money back.Cheap plug wires are not the way to go,the high end autoparts stores sell the best high quality plugwires.I know Carquest sell very good high quality plug wires.Cheap plugwire will cause the miss also. For the plugs go with Ac Delco,Ac Delcos are the best spark plugs for GM vehicles.
