hi all. well chevy says the cat's stopped up which is fine with me, im just not paying $1024 for them to bolt up a brand new full exhaust system, soo..... i was wondering, is there a high flow bolt-on generic or specific cat for cavaliers?
i have a 95 2.3l
ALSO
i'm not condoning this, and i know exactly how to do it, and dont want ANYONE to say how they did it, BUT.. i had the thought of hollowing the cat (live nowhere near california) have any of you done this, or cut it, and if so what was the experiance afterward? i hear about everything you could emagine in general about doing it. more hp, better fuel economy, to hp loss and reduction of engine life and horrible fuel economy. i had it cut from a 2.8l v6 s-10 when i had it years ago, and i'd say it added around 15hp (you could tell) and the fuel economy never changed. whatever i do, its going to start rolling friday reguardless so please help me out. thankx

you can hollow it if you want but you can also pick up an aftermarket cat for under $100 thats highflow and pass emissions

Just get a replacement cat from a parts store. There's no significant difference between a "performance high flow" cat and the standard ones sold today. And you can buy a non-car specific cat at any parts shop, you just need the inlet and outlet diameters.

i ended up taking it to a muffler shop. i actually did get a magniflow cat put on and MAN what a difference in sound.. i just cant describe it.. it has a low smooth rumbling sound @ 1.5k to 2.2k rpm, and a slight rumble as rpms elevates slowly but when i hit the gas, it sounds just like when i had the old cat (didnt change the muffler....yet) but louder and more aggressive. and it's definitely got a few more hp from it. i had no idea a cat would make any difference as far as sound goes, but i do have another question. im not going with a catback (since i didnt do it with the cat i got and it's doing me pretty good) but i want to know the sound/hp difference if any between an oval muffler and a bullet style muffler. i dont want a honda cry *truthfully i cant stand it* but i dont want it too low, just about in the middle.. i guess you could say i want the sound level to be just tolerable enough where i dont have to turn up the sterio to hear a song, but i still want a rumble. i really want a bullet style muffler cause they just look cool, but either way i want to go with what sounds good to me. any comments?

Screw the fart can. Go with Dynomax.

I paid 70 something for a Magnaflow high flo cat 2.5" with O2 boss pre welded in. Universal fit.

I think an oval design is going to give you the sound you want, a clean, low pitch idle, and a mean, yet beautiful, mid-rpm tone, cruising or full on it, and when you hit the higher rpms it's not as obnoxiuos as the tinny "fart cans" although it's still audible of course!
It's like comparing a trumpet to a trombone, in all rpm ranges, the canister is small, and lets more crappy sound out, while the oval design traps some of these sound waves and lowers the pitch quite a bit, giving it that "BALLS" sound, instead of a crackly-poppy "Wweeaeeaeiiiiing"...

since when does louder mean you have more horsepower?
you eather need to dyno or get some before/after 1/4 mile time to say you "got a few more horsepower"

wow man.. thats a great assumption. well i guess that means that if it feels faster and more powerful than before, then that means there is most probably no hp or torque gain? hmmm...... i mean i didnt say it had a whopping 30 more hp or anything, and even still, it may just be a few hp that wasnt getting out because of the stopped cat... either way i dont care, go f&ck yourself.
