BMW 750 iL starter

I have a 1988 BMW 750 iL.When I turn the ignition key, I hear the starter motor spinning but it does not engage the fly wheel, so no cranking. I looked for the starter motor, but have not been able to locate it yet.
Any ideas, where to look and how to replace the starter?
