i have an 89 Civic LX, with 262k miles. original D15B2 engine. Just this week, the car started making this whining sound...not extremely loud, but loud enough to notice it from inside the car. the sound is relative to engine speed, and is present when the car is fully warmed up. It almost sounds like i have a supercharger in my car...unfortunately no. oh and it comes and goes...

Sounds like the transmission, input bearing perhaps..or throwout bearing. Any backup on this? I have definately heard of the simulated supercharger haha, and his tranny blew the input shaft bearing about 20 miles later.

would it be the transmission even if its in neutral and still whines? great...I'm planning on putting 100 miles on tomorrow...I dont want to be stuck 50 miles from home. thanks for the suggestions...keep em coming! i hope its not my tranny.. or maybe i'll take my 02 civic out..but its auto and no fun to drive...

whining noises can also be from an overtightened timing belt or accessory belt, or loose accessory belt. Check the tension on them (look up the deflection in a service manual).

oh man...my car is in need of a timing belt change...and the sound didnt seem to come from the tranny...it came seemingly from the timing belt cover/cam gear.

i dont think it can be the throwout bearing frodogt because the bearing is only activated when the clutch is pushed in so when he is driving it wouldn't make the noise. correct?

well, I just drove 100 miles to and from a local university, and the car was fine. No whining noise this time, but I was weary of the timing belt breaking. Thanks for everyones' help.
