Clearcoat Tamiya TS-47 (Chrome Yellow)?

I'm working on my 2nd model ever, a Tamiya Porsche Carrera GT. I decided to paint it yellow using TS-47 Chrome Yellow. I've read on this forum that I need to clearcoat metallic colors before using rubbing compound on it. Since this is "Chrome" Yellow, is it considered a metallic color?

You don't need the clear coats just for rubbing out the finish if it's a solid colour. You could just add additional coats of the yellow instead.
The clear will add a bit more depth to the finished car though.

Nope, TS-47 Chrome Yellow is not metallic. It's a regular solid colour, just a bit oranger than the regular Tamiya Yellow. It will polish out well enough on it's own without a clear coat.

I’ve just completed a Nissan R34 Pennzoil using TS 47 Chrome Yellow and found it to one of the best yellows I’ve worked with. It covered really well, as yellow can be tricky.

I applied about 7 coats in the end, three mist, two wet and then I sanded the orange peel out. I then applied a further two wet coats to allow for polishing, and it rubbed out to a stunning finish, so I don’t think you’d need a clearcoat.

That’s a nice GT you’ve got on the go there. Looks nice in that colour. This is the Pennzoil I spoke of, as you can see – clear coating isn’t necessary.

Well to be honest I was really impressed when I clearcoated my Pennzoil Nismo, from the deep of the yellow: some notes:

1- is only your second build and seem great from the start, my advice is, like guys, take the easy way and polish dyrectly the paint to have some satisfaction from this beauty.

2- for the same thing I think yoi need a bit practice to use clearcoat, more for the TS13 wich is superb but needs some care (read post searchin clearcoating here around)

3- well polishing a clearcoat is in the same time easyest that polish a solid color: well try polish tech. on this wonderful yellow and next time you could be able to do on clear.
