Transmission slipping--2000 LS

Recently I have noticed that when my 2000 V8 LS is shifting from 1st to 2nd, it seems like it is slipping. When the car tries to switch gears, it makes a humming noise for a second, then finally switches. This mainly occurs after I drive on the highway for an extended period of time (hour or so). When I get back into the city and have to come to a stop, it starts happening. Does anyone know what could be the problem?
