im thinking of putting an H22 into my 95 hatch. ive read some different things here and there, and im a little confused. some places say that with the heavier h22, im gonna need to replace the axle along with the engine, but other places say that shouldnt be a problem. can anyone tell me if anything besides the engine would need to be swapped.

the extra weight is goign to matter, but not because of the axles, I am sure you are gonna ned different axles than the civic has already, maybe lude axles will fit but not sure, however with the heavier engine you need stiffer springs and even stiffer shocks

I found out site for the engine that comes with the axles, the complete engine, ecu, and tranny, for under $3k

honda-hybridperf.org (i think that the site) does't recomend the swap. yeah it can be done....and yeah it will be fast.....but apparantly it will eventually cause problems. and it's not any faster than a modified B18C swap. or a built B20 swap :) that's what i'll be doing when i sell my car.......HMO.com has a B20 longblock for $800

a properly built H22 will be faster than any properly built b-series.
the H22 weights about 90lbs more than a B18C1 engine. get stiffer springs/shock as earlier mentioned. try to save as much weight as possible. maybe get a carbon fiber hood if you want. if you don't need A/C, take it out.. u save about 40lbs or so taking the A/C compressor out. relocate the battery if you have to. :)

any??? hmmm...
possibly, but there are more parts and a larger aftermarket for the b-series. plus the B is more plug and play in a civic. either engine will absolutely transform your car. it's really just a matter of preference.

yea, but look at the fastest honda, its running an H-series engine. oh well...either spend $3300 for a GSR or $2400 for an H22:o
either way..you'll love it.... or at least the first high 14 second in the B18C1 civic:finger:

H22 will take your cornerning abilty to ZERO...if you want to go with that make it worth wild...h23 with h22 head then upgrade to high compresion new rods and cams pistons, machine port the head. then cut up your hatch to fit the bitch in then go.
Ive already done it beast of a macine..
wow and i have that exact engine at the shop now.
Call me if ya need anything or email

for the price youy are gonan pay to get it all done, just beef up your internals, get some cams and P&P head and all that good stuff, then get a nice turbo, still probably cheaper than the H22A swap alone into your car and will blow the doors off it, especially in cornering and probably braking too.

i have a friend with an H22 swapped in his 97 Civic. he added some carbon fiber hood, relocated the battery, take the A/C compressor out, lighter flywheel, lighter radiator, lighter almost everything. so basically, his front end weighted the same as if he swapped the B18C1 in. not to mention his $1000 full racing coilover suspension.
i wouldn't say that unless you have tried all possibilities. saying that the H22 will make the cornering ability is ignorant. people should forget about all the stereotypes. but not all people think the same:o

(to original post: ot :smoker: )
adding turbo lag to a tourque-less 1.8 liter is not my idea of the best daily driver. during my commute i spend about as much time below 4000 rpm as above it. a 2.2 liter sounds ALOT more like the speedy daily driver i have in mind.
besides, this way of developing the car has much more potential. if i were to supercharge the h22a at a later time, the car would get pretty sick at the track, and would have even more daily-torque in the low end. what do you think GSteg?
i should probably start my own thread on this topic

Eh... I don't think its worth the trouble, time and money to do that swap. People have done it before and they haul some ass.... If you are looking for a daily driver get a modded b18c. Less trouble some. If ya got the know how and time to put into it then the more power too you. the H22 is heavier than b-series It was meant for a larger car. You will have so much understeer it wouldn't make it worth while. There is just too much dead weight in the front of the car but like GSteg said you can lighten it up a bit and get a stiffer suspension. I think you are going to need new hubs to accomodate for the spindles. I would figure Honda upsized the axles because of the much more torque the H22 has. and working on the car would just be a bitch. I went to StreetDreams II in Detroit when it was around... I saw a H22a in a civic. No one was around it and I looked at it because it looked different. I knew it was an H22 and a guy came up to me and called me a real import enthusiast because I knew that there was something special to the car that no one else noticed. But anyways just looking at the motor looked sweet but I also noticed how much of a bitch it must be to work on. I would not want to put a timing belt on the damn thing. the crank pulley was almost hitting the damn frame on the thing. Its up to ou it shopuldn't matter what we say its just our opinions and what we have come across in past experiences. Good luck if you decide to go through with the swap.

thats why you put all the mods in when the engine is out already:D

I just read the other threads and it kinda put some doutbs in my mind.
I was thinking of putting a JDM prelude Type S (220Hp) engine (Yes Type S ...got access to one) into a light Civic HB...but as the other guys here helped see, there is a problem with the weight distribution.
The axle thing I kinda expected, but that question is whether or not the Prelude's axle would fit the civic, otherwise I guess i would have to look to the aftermarket industry.
Down here where i live (St. Lucia, C'bbean) we have a Mistibushi Colt (similar to the Civic HB...just as small) with a 3000GT Twin Turbo engine...the shit kicks ass, but its strickly a track car ( the front was changed to a Galant's cuz the engine is way to big...lol)
Now I know the 'Civic Type S' would really do some damage on the track, but i think i would also want to have it as a daily driven car.....ummmm a there i think as you guys pointed out problem might lye...... i guess i'll continue doing my reseach on H22 swaps and see what i can gather.
Don't intend to do the swap anytime soon, so i'll have enough time to think it out.
