Caterham JPE W.I.P.

Finaly started it.. the tamiya caterham JPE. this will be a VERRY slow build. I'm not planning on finishing it this years.. perhaps not even next year. First of all I want to thank some people.
-Sennake and scale-master (both members here) for convincing me to buy this kit. Perhaps I'll curse them to hell later if everything goes wrong ;-)
-Jean Leon De Haen. Who allowed me to take some close up pictures of his own caterham .(an beautiful example in scale 1:1)
-and Bart, for pushing me a little more in bying it. And giving me some ID by making a caterham himself. he did it in 2 months.....

So I want to make a caterham that stands out from the rest, but because I don't have the experience of someone like Sennake, neither do I have the machining skills (and talent) of Scale-master I decided to go bollocks on the colour scheme. First of all the chassis wil be white. It's motip white primer and I wheatered it using tamiya enamel gunmetal. The body colour will be something flashy (this will be for the next update) and for the engine i have something special in mind too. Well it's not THAT special, but I'll keep it to myself until i get there ;-) I'll also try to replace the most visible screws by tiny nuts and bolts. I'm not really sure how I'll do this but it's a challenge.

yep 1/12. The one in 1/24 is a super seven. not excatly the same.

Update.

I've painted some body panels and installed the front suspension. I've Added the brake wires (braided hose)
I was planning to make it a dark red, but changed my mind and choose a bit more radical colour.. hope you like it.

Oh man, i love these things. i cant wait to see it finished. Goeed job so far.

Thanks for the shot of the rear suspension. Now I know what the DeDeon setup looks like.

Finaly an update, after more than 6 months.

I've been mainly working on the engine. I replaced the black tubing with some braided hoses I made from verry thin coax cable and with Yellow plastic wires. The exhaust was a big problem. There was a verry ugly and huge seam that ran over the entire lenght. I've sanded and polished the exhausts for hours to get an axceptable finish. The heatstaining is done with tamiya clear orange and bleu. In real it's a lot more subtile than on the pictures. I've added some minor wiring electrical wiring. It's not realistic, but it just looks OK.
The rollbar was black, but got damaged, so I redid it in Alclad stainless steel. First try with alclad's and I'm rather happy with the result.
Finaly I've added some PE bolts and nuts.

excellent work so far. the heat staining look very realistic, I thought maybe you built the header out of stainless tubing, then actually blew heat through it! keep up the great work, you are well on your way to having a master piece.

For the orange i used first tamiya metal primer, then tamiya white primer, then tamiya TS31 bright orange, then tamiya TS?? pearl clear (verry lightly)and finaly Tamiya TS13 clear..... rather an expensive paintjob ;-)
The parts you see now are the only bodyparts that wille be orange.. the rest will be black or carbon.

another update. Yes it's a really slow build.. Most of the engine work is done. I've also started on the rest of the body work. The nose cone is almost finished. Just soms extra polishing and the grill. Hope you like it.

Did you do the stitching on the seatbelts yourself, or does the kit come that way? It all looks good!

the stitching does come with the kit. If you build it boxstock it's really an awsome kit.. i can recomend it to everybody.. who is willing to pay the amount of cash for it...

Final update before it's completed. To bad the timing belt "snapped" and I don't know how to put the cover over it without dismanteling the engine. I suspose the car is ready for a big and costly engine rebuild ;-)
