A/c and cooling fans stay on

97 Jetta GLS 2.0 gasoline Purchased used 2/06.

A month ago, the A/C got stuck on all the time. Disconnected the wires until my son could get it home (in college) and have it worked on.

My husband can't find any obvious reason for this. We also found out that the cooling fan stays on as well. He has to disconnect that while it is sitting overnight or it runs all night long and drains the battery.

Any ideas what to look for. Husband thinks it's electrical but can't quite figure out where to start checking.

Thanks!

Has anyone come up with an answer to this cooling fan problem? My cooling fans in my '99 Jetta are staying on after I turn the car off. The only way for me to stop them is to pull the fan's fuse under the hood. Thanks for any help.

how long do they stay on because after driving a while they are supposed to stay on.

Our cooling fan stay on all the time ..not turning off. By morning, the battery is dead unless we unplug the fan at night. Then of course,if you forget to plug it in and the car overheats.

But...we finally got access to the car (it's my son's and he was away at tech school but came home this weekend.). My husband took off the fan switch control box under the cooling system reservoir. It was a mess. Apparently when the water pump went out a few months ago, water had gotten into the box and corroded the connections. The a/c would not turn off and eventually the fan came on and stayed on. My son disconnected the a/c and the fan while it was not being driven. Then the car started overheating because my son would forget to turn the fan back on and it caused even more water to get into the box. We had to go get it and tow it home.

To fix it is going to be about 60-70 for a new Fan Switch Control Box (used from a parts place). He thinks that will fix the problem.

okay thats good then, but like I said, the fans are supposed to stay on for a while after driving, especially for a long drive

It was staying on non stop all day and all night long...24/7 unless it was manually turned off.

BUT..the fan switch control box fixed the problem. My husband put it in and now the fan turns off (once things are cool) , the a/c no longer stays on all the time, plus..it fixed the cruise control that was not working when we got it.

All is well for now.....

thats the coolant fan control module, its a common problem. The wires get corroded in the connector and then cross short the power and ground so the fans stay on all the time.

Is this the fan control module?

I am having the same prob, has anyone figured this out??? I have a 2000 jetta VR6 with the following problems.
1) cooling fans stay on for 10 minutes whether the car was on or just turned the key to on.
2) my temp gauge is showing no temp deflection but heater and radiator hoses are hot.
3) the A/C also went out, the clutch will not engage.

All of this happened at the same time. I have replaced the fan control module but no change.

Help!

Here is what I found, the previous owner had the fuse for #16 in the #17 open spot. Now my A/C works and the fans do not come on until they are suppose to. I am going to replace the ECT sensor tonight and that should take care of my temp gauge.

Any thoughts on why my cruise control doesn't work? 2000 Jetta VR6
