our auto transmissions?
My owner's manual says Dex-3; however Haynes manual says Dex-2
My shop has used Dex-2 on my tranny over the course of 2-3 fluid change outs; have over 60k on their fluid, i.e. Dex 2 with no problems in shifting, slipping, etc.
So my question is, since I have a very mild leak, WHAT do I put into this tranny? Dex 2 or Dex 3, and are the two compatible with eachother??
FWIW - even if the Dex 2 is the wrong fluid, tranny's shifting wonderfully!
Oh, and I know it's been repeating 10000k times, but can one give me exact/precise instructions on -
1. Checking fluid level, on these no dipstick thingies?
2. Partial drain/refills through add/check fill plugs?
And, should one just barely let the truck idle for 3-5 minutes before procedure's, or can they be performed after doing basic city driving as well?

Dexron III is completely compatible with transmission applications specifying Dexron II. Some other applications that specified D-II (like some power steering systems) may have a little trouble with the D-III, but transmissions should be fine with it. Version IV may be incompatible, so don't go there.

DexII probably wouldn't harm your 4L30E, but that is an out dated ATF. Use Dexron III or any Mercon/Dexron III universal ATF will be fine & is your most common off the shelf ATF.
