1 or 2 Whines under the hood

I have a 98 PGV and the other day I pull out of my drivway and I hear a whine in 1st gear. It goes away or lessens after it shifts. I thought trannni but it was rebuilt 3 years ago and fluids look good. There is another symptom that started the same day. When I turn the wheel I get a loud whine as well (fluid looks good there too). Do I have two different problems on the same day (Transmission and power stearing just my luck :-) or is there something that could explain both symptoms.

Slight update: after driving the van today I felt a shudder when turnning the wheel sharply. I'm sure something is up with power stearing. Does anyone think this is urgent. I mean is the van safe to drive?
