Ignition coil questions

Are there any performance differences between the Magnavox style coil pack and the type II ignition coils? Can a magnavox coil pack be replaced with the type two coils? Reason I ask is because MSD makes performance coils for the type II ignition coils, but not for the Magnovox type. The firing order is the same for both, so I thought they could be interchangable, just thought I'd check first. Thanks!

Yes, the Magnavox can be replaced with the Delco ignition system with three coils. If the replacement unit is of the same vintage, the wiring harness should hookup to the Delco unit without any problem.

I did not know you could do that....I am curious also, does it give anymore power? If so, then I know what I'm picking up next time I'm at the pick and pull junkyard...

The Delco unit has several advantages over the Magnavox. First, the coils are higher voltage (30K) vs. (20-25K) and independent of the ICM. (They can be replaced individually). The Delco system was initially used as a factory upgrade from the Magnavox, and is still being used in some cases. Second, long term reliability, has proven better on the Delco system. (The Magnavox unit was prone to moisture related failures). Finally, the individual parts are cheaper to replace than the complete Magnavox unit. I.e. ICM & coils.

I did notice a change in performance when I changed to MSD coils & wires. Smoother idle and instant throttle response were just some of the benefits. WOT was also improved!

The MSD coils are rated @ 40K Volts vs. 30K for the Delco. I have heard of MSD coil failures after about two years, however, I installed mine about two years ago and they are still working fine. I guess time will tell. All three cost about $120.00, or $40.00 ea, so replacement of one, or all, is not an issue for me. The standard warranty is one year.

Spark plug wires are very important to the operation of your DIS ignition system. A good quality, helically wound wire and proper routing are beneficial to getting the best performance from your ignition. MSD uses a Heli-Core & 8.5mm Super Conductor Wire. Helically wound wires provide a good path for the spark to follow while keeping Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) to a minimum. The wire set I use is part #32789, listed in the catalog for the Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8L Supercharged 1997-2000

How do you tell the two apart? And do you switch the ignition module as well? I have the type two ignition system, all plugs on right side of coils. Thanks!

Can I test the voltage output on the packs I got now with a volt meter? and which setting do I use if so? Thanks again!

Sounds like you have the "better" coil/ ICM pack we were talking about, cntrysthbst! The other is a coil pack with the contacts on both sides of the housing.

10-4. Do you know how to test the voltage output without feeling it?

You can use a spark plug with the gap opened up to .100 and insert it in each plug wire (one at a time) to test the voltage output. If it throws a good blue spark across that gap, you have a good coil.

I have a 1990 pontiac 6000 with a 3.1 L. One coil pack is not firing. I replaced that coil pack, but the new one is not firing either. I pulled the ignition module and had it bench tested. It tested fine. Would someone have a suggestion where to look next?
